WATER SUPPLY OF MIDDLETOWN Description of Plant and Filtration System. Specially written for FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING Middletown a city of about 15,000, is an important manufacturing and trade centre in Orange county, N. Y. It is built on the Mohegan creek and situated in a very hilly country. Its waterworks system is owned by the city and was installed in 1867. The system is gravity, and the source of supply springs and surface water distant some five or six miles from the business centre. The first impounding reservoir received the supply from a drainage area of eight square miles. It was formed by a earthen dam twenty-five feet in height and 150 feet above town level, and was built across a narrow valley, Hooding sixty acres and giving a capacity of 300,000,000 gallons.
