A PLUCKY RESCUE

Issue 1 and Volume 38.

A PLUCKY RESCUE At Pittsburg, Pa., while the Pittsburg Shelter house was being fumigated by burning sulphur, the smoke issuing from the windows caused someone to turn in an alarm of fire. Lieutenant Martin, of engine company No. 30, without inquiry as to the cause ran into the building, and up three flights of stairs, searching for the fire. On the third floor he was overcome. Captain Joseph Schloss learned of his being inside, and, at the risk of his life, reached him and carried him down the fire escape. Lieutenant Martin was taken to the hospital, in such a precarious condition as to need the oxygen inhalation treatment where pure air is being pumped into his lungs. The Georgetown, Del., fire department has elected Thomas B. Pepper chief.
