THE NUMBER OF FIREPROOF BUILDINGS. According to the New York Fire Insurance Exchange, there are 2,968 fireproof buildings in the United States and Canada, 1,502, or more than one-half of which are in New York. Of these 1,389 are in Manhattan and The Bronx, and 113 arc in the borough of Brooklyn. Jersey City and Hoboken, N. J., have twenty-eight: Newark. N. J., has forty-five: Chicago. 298; Boston, 265; St. Louis, 190: Philadelphia, 166; Pittsburg, 100; Buffalo, eighty-six; Cincinnati, fifty; Cleveland, forty-eight; Rochester, N. V. forty-six; San Francisco, forty; Montreal, thirty-five; Milwaukee. thirty-two; Toronto, seventeen; Louisville, fourteen: New Orleans and Indianapolis, ten each; Detroit, eight; Syracuse. N. Y.. six. Baltimore being in a state of transition, so to say, the number within its limits is not given.
