FIRES AT PHILADELPHIA.

Issue 23 and Volume 38.

FIRES AT PHILADELPHIA. Philadelphia’s condition during the past week has been fiery to a degree, and a large amount of property has been destroyed, although very much more has been saved. One $60,000 fire, in Mercantile building. 837-39 Market street, caused considerable damage on the premises of two clothing manufacturers and a wall paper factory. With the pumps at the high-pressure station at Delaware avenue and Race street giving a pressure of nearly 150 pounds to the square inch, the two of the four nozzles on the cannon wagon threw 2,800 gallons apiece into the building every minute. District Engineer Meskill designed the cannon wagon, and was in charge of it, this fire being the first real test it has been given.
