CORRESPONDENCE THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS OF MANHATTAN AND LONDON. To FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING: It is the fashion to hold up the fire department of New York city, and the Manhattan division in particular, as the most perfect institution ever devised by man, and as transcending those of anywhere else in the world. In doing so, the opportunity is generally taken to have a shy at those of Europe in general and of the British Isles in particular, which many visitors from the United States, as well as many who have never set foot in the old world think it their bounden duty to run down either in press interviews or at private gatherings. Now, I do not deny that the European fire brigades could learn much from those of America; but the converse is also true. If only in one respect the fire departments on this side of the Atlantic…
