To FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING: It is the fashion to hold up the fire department of New York city, and the Manhattan division in particular, as the most perfect institution ever devised by man, and as transcending those of anywhere else in the world. In doing so, the opportunity is generally taken to have a shy at those of Europe in general and of the British Isles in particular, which many visitors from the United States, as well as many who have never set foot in the old world think it their bounden duty to run down either in press interviews or at private gatherings.
