HERBERT L. THOWLESS Herbert L. Thowless, attorney at law, of Newark, N. J., who has so long acted as the special New Jersey correspondent of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING, has been appointed one of the two school commissioners for the Eleventh (his own) ward in that city. He was nominated by Mr. George Varley, a prominent builder and the remaining commissioner of that ward, In pro- posing Mr. Thowless, Commissioner Varlcy said that, with his former colleague, he had made a thorough canvass of the generous quantity of available material for the office in the ward and could find none who, in his judgment, would prove a more worthy successor to the new’ sheriff than the one he had named. The nomination was seconded by Commissioners Monteith of the Eighth ward, and Schoen, of the Fourteenth ward, both lawyers of high standing. Mr. Thowless, who was elected by acclamation, and…
