NEW YORK WATER APPOINTMENTS. Mayor McClellan is having a hard row to hoe over the proper person to appoint as commissioner of water supply. Some time ago it was apparently well understood that the present occupant of that position was to be awarded some other position. Now, however, it would seem that Commissioner John T. Oakley will he reappointed. He is said to lie strongly backed by C. F. Murphy, the head of Tammany Hall, and it is claimed that he was made a scapegoat in the gas troubles and should have a vindication.’” It is also confidently affirmed that, as Mayor McClellan had his own way in the appointment of Thomas Hassctt. his chief clerk, as secretary of Commissioner Oakley’s department-a $6,000 a year berth—the Tammany leader is to he given his own way as to who shall be the head of that department.
