FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING In another place will be found a letter from the American-La France Fire Engine company relative to the test of fire engines in Chicago on the 15th instant. The communication states that the company does not propose to enter the competition, unless all manufacturers of fire engines are represented; it also demands that the contract shall be awarded the successful competitor. This stand is made by the American-La France company, on the ground that such tests are very expensive, and that no guarantee has been given by the city of Chicago that it will receive the order, should it outclass all other engines tested. The last of the two-platoon system has probably been heard of in Chicago.
