PERSONAL. Mr. John C. Kelley, president of the National Meter company, who, with some of his family, has been visiting California, returned to New York last week looking hale and hearty after his pleasant trip. Mr. Kelley was at Pasadena, about 700 miles away from San Francisco, when the earthquake visited that city, and did not feel any unpleasantness from its effects. O. E. Shields, of Pittsburg, has been appointed manager of the railroad water-softening department of the Pittsburgh Filter Manufacturing company, and took active management of this department on June 1. Mr. Shields has had many years’ experience in the handling of waters for boiler purposes, and, as it is his intention to devote his time exclusively to railroad work, he will undoubtedly build this department of the Pittsburgh Filter Manufacturing company’s business tip into a large and important branch of its business.
