THE LATE CHIEF J. J. LITTLE. The death is announced of J. J. Little, a prominent business man and chief of the fire department of Smith, Tex. Twenty-three years ago, when Chief Little came to Fort Smith from Griffin, Ga., he found no fire department. He at once organised three volunteer companies, each of which was equipped with a hand-hose reel, a hook and ladder company being added afterward. He became chief of the department and held that position, with the exception of a few months, till the day of his death. The fire department was his especial pride. He was recognised by the departments of other cities as a firstclass chief, and he kept ahreast of the times, urging council to improve the service.
