MONTREAL AND ITS FIRE PROTECTION. The Canadian Fire Underwriters’ association has resolved to increase the insurance rates at Montreal, Que., by fifty cents to the present gross rates and forty cents to the present coinsurance rates. These rates apply only to the inner congested district, bounded on the north by Craig street, on the east by the C. P. R. Place Viger depot, on the south by the river, and on the west by a line from Little St. Antoine street south to the river. Practically, however, the increase is general throughout the city, and for the outer district the advance is twenty-five cents on gross non-coinsurance rates and twenty cents on net coinsurance rates. Fireproof buildings and buildings having a proper system of sprinklers are exempt from the foregoing advances, as are dwellings. The districts of St. Henri and Ste.
