MODERN FIRE APPARATUS. The days of the hose carriage were really numbered when the hose wagon made its appearance. Then followed the combination wagon, perhaps the most useful piece of apparatus in the fire-service. For small departments the chemical combination and hook and ladder combination wagons are indispensable. Their usefulness has been demonstrated by the large number at present in commission and the increased demand for them in all departments. In large cities the chemical and hose wagon is the most desirable for outlying residential districts, as it has been demonstrated that a considerable proportion of small fires has been controled without the use of a large stream of water. The wagon illustrated herewith is the production of the American-La France Fire Engine company, of Elmira. N. Y., and must commend itself to the up-to-date chief as being a very ornamental and useful machine.
