VALUABLE WATERPOWER OBTAINED. A correspondent at Troy, N. Y., states: “It is reported that the General Electric company, of Schenectady, has acquired a valuable waterpower on the Hoosick river at Schaghticoke, and is developing it, under the name of the Schaghticoke Electric company. The power is obtained from a considerable waterfall at Buck’s Neck. Ten miles upstream, at Johnsonville, a storage dam is being built, which will flood more than 1,000 acres and will back water five miles, wiping out valuable farms. It is thought that the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad company is financing the scheme. Tt is estimated that about 10,000horsepower will be developed. It is about twenty-five mills’ across country from Schaghticoke to Schenectady, where the General Electric plant is situated. Wilkes-Barre. Pa., will have no paid fire department this year. There is not money enough to cover the cost.
