PACIFIC COAST FIRE CHIEFS MEET. Correspondence of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING. CENTRALIA. WASH., Sept. 21, 1907. Members from five States were in attendance at the Centralia convention. Considerable time was given to the discussion of ways and means of bringing about adequate laws for the installation and maintenance of proper fire-escapes. It was the general opinion that legislation in this regard should be by the State and Provincial governments, thus making it generally applicable and putting its enforcement up to State officials. This would make fire-safetv devices more uniform in their character and adoption than could possibly he the case, if th – control were left to the local authorities of the several towns.
