Good Work of Corning Department. Chief Q. W. Farr, of Corning, N. Y., reports eighty-two fires during the past year, with a total loss of $16,572.42; property at risk, $407,910.10. The department traveled eighty-one and threequarters miles; used 768 gal. of chemical extinguisher; laid 16,700 ft. of hose; raised 1,140 ft. of ladders; was on duty at fires eighty-nine and three-quarters hours. The fires were mostly in wooden buildings, ten being in one-story frame; fifty-seven in two-story frame; one in a threestory frame; three in two-story brick; four in three-story brick; one in four-story brick. The alarms were about equally divided, forty being from boxes and forty-two from telephones.—The insurance was as follows: Buildings, $242,975; contents, $357,910. Insurance paid: Buildings, $10,175.11; contents, $5,907.31; estimated loss over insurance, $490—total, $16,572.42; amount of insurance over losses, $341.337 58.
