Excellent Work at Brantford. Deduct the $34,000 loss caused by the Goold, Shapley & Muir conflgration at Brantford, Ont., and there is left a loss of less than $5,000 during 1907, to be set down as having taken place in that city—an exceedingly good showing for the fire department, of which Chief D. J. Lewis has been the head for eighteen years. And it may be noticed, in passing, that so highly do his fellow citizens value his services that they have just added $200 a year to his salary—a well deserved recognition of all that he has done in the way of protecting the city from fire. That he does not consider the work as by any means accomplished is shown by his recommendations for the betterment of the fire-service.
