Fire-loss in August. Instead of being, as is usual, a profitable month to the fire insurance companies, August has proved very much the reverse. The losses have been heavy and on well insured property. As will be seen from the comparative table given below, the fire-loss for the month just past was over $3,000,000 above that of the corresponding month in 1907 and close upon $13,500,000 above that of August, 1906. The table is as follows: T’l 8 m’ths. $399,735,200 $155,966,550 $164,004,500 The number of fires in August at which the damage amounted to or exceeded $10,000 was 272, classified as follows: $10,000 to $20,000, 101; $20,000 to $30,000, 51; $30,000 to $50,000, 34; $50,000 to $75,000, 24; $75,000 to $100,000, 14; $100,000 to $200,000, 29; $200,000 and over, 16.
