The conflagration hazard at Oswego, according to the engineers of the committee on Fire Prevention of the National Board of Fire Underwriters, is “severe in parts of the principal mercantile district, due to structural weaknesses, a very poor water supply and a weak fire department. Valuable mitigating features are found in the width of the river and good width of the streets. Bad fires can occur in the lumber and manufacturing district. The hazard throughout the city is greatlv increased by the totally inadequate water supply and the weak fire department.” A fire in Watervliet badly damaged the residence of George Trimble at 412 Sixth ave., and burned a wagonshed, barn and five horses. Much of the furniture and household effects were saved. At Jordanville, lightning set fire to the Ostrander barns and at Glen, the Argersinger residence and barn met with a similar fate.…
