Notes From Canton. Special correspondence of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERINO. Canton, Ill., Fulton’s busy county town, is situated 186 miles southwest of Chicago and 28 miles west of Peoria. It has a population of 12,000, and within its limits is one of the largest implement factories in the world. In addition to this institution, which, when running to its capacity, employs 1,400 hands, it has several small factories including cigar manufactories, machine shops, and planing mills. It is also located in a great coal mining region and the output runs very high during the year. The town has 10 miles of paved streets, 17 of water mains and 16 of sewer. The waterworks system has 160 hydrants scattered throughout its limits. The source of the water supply for the city is two deep wells, with a capacity of 464 gal. per minute.
