The Water at Ludlow. In connection with the recent inquiry as to the possibility of a resumption of Ludlow, Mass., filtration by means of the addition of another length to the intake pipe through which the water is pumped from the reservoir into the filter. The answer is that the centrifugal pumps are limited in their lifting power and could raise only a part of the supply the additional distance. The water department has not thought it wise to make an expensive readjustment for only a few days’ use of the filter. Twice recently the filters have been frozen over, and the chances are that they could not longer be used even if the water supply in the reservoir should rise to a point within the range of the pumps’ lifting power.
