Equipment for Water Analyses. For many years Chicago, to say nothing of some much smaller cities, has been a long way ahead of New York, in its equipment for the chemical and bacteriological analysis of water. Up to the present the laboratory equipment of the department of water supply has been such as to fit it only for chemical analyses. These merely showed whether or not the water was contaminated, and to what extent it was polluted. As to the nature of that contamination and the species of bacteria that infested the water, such an analysis gave no information. This defect, however, is to be remedied, and now the water supply of the city is to be tested every two days for typhoid and any other pathogenic germs.
