Birmingham Makes a New Contract. North Birmingham, Ala., has contracted to supply Birmingham with water at a rate just about 50 per cent, less than that now in vogue, originally established by the legislature and maintained by the Birmingham Waterworks company. The city will be furnished with fire hydrants at $25 each, up to 500; from 500 up to 750, at $20 each; and from 750 to 1,000 up to $15 per year, instead of $55 per year for each hydrant, as the local company charged. North Birmingham also agrees to build a standpipe on Red mountain to furnish 90-lb. pressure to the elevated sections. It agrees to put fire hydrants in the heart of the city, with a water pressure of 200 lb. at a rate of $50 per year for each plug.
