The Power of a Fire Chief. The Alexandria, Va., board of aldermen recently passed, notwithstanding the fact that the mayor refused to sign it, a resolution to the effect that the chief of the fire department or the fire warden shall have the power to order the fire department to go beyond the city limits whenever in his judgment its services are necessary—the resolution to be in force till the general laws committee report a law in the premises in the near future. It was pointed out to the council that the resolution had no intention to curb the mayor’s power, nor could it have any effect upon it. The mayor held the council could make ordinances as to fire companies, etc., and in relation to the powers and duties of such companies, fire wardens and principal engineer as it thinks proper.
