Reading Fire Department. Mayor William Rick thus speaks of the fire department of Reading, Pa., in his first anuual message: “The Reading volunteer fire department is one of the best of its kind. However, we will not permit our pride in this department to cause us to be blind as to its faults. Our chief and his assistants are to be commended. But more system is needed by the separate companies at fires. Too many bosses make trouble, and the work less effective. Each company ought to have a foreman and assistants to take charge, in case of his absence These foremen and assistants ought to be designated by badges—a sign of authority to policemen guarding the lines.
