Memphis Needs Better Fire Protection. According to F. M. Griswold, of the Home Fire Insurance company, who lately addressed the City club, of Memphis, Tenn., that city’s fire protection is not what it ought to be. He had carefully investigated it daily for five weeks, going through every street and alley and all the public buildings. He was struck with the great amount of waste paper and other combustibles in the alleys and round business buildings, which he found not removed, as it should be, in the alleys. He was told that, when the firemen ordering such stuff out. the police ordered it to be taken back again. In the business district he had not found a really fireproof building—that is to say, one that would stop any fire that got beyond the control of the fire department.
