New Building Code for New York. The proposed new building code for New York city, embodied in the majority report to the board of aldermen, has been forced through that body by a very close vote. The defects in the measure and the unjust discrimination made possible under it have already been pointed out in FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING; and though these defects are generally apparent and were strongly urged they did not, however, suffice against the political pressure of various kinds which was brought to bear to force the passage of the measure. It is plainly apparent that the proposed code is so drawn with reference to its administrative provisions as to perpetuate a system of favoritism in the selection of fire-proofing and building material.
