New Jersey State News. A Newton local rcimrt says the fire department is under the supervision of the town committe. There are four hose companies, and a Darktown supplementary contingent. In the ranks of the Kittatinny Company are lawyers, judges, a marble man, editors, a journalist, merchants, a veterinary surgeon and a tax commissioner. The chief of the Newton fire department receives a salary of $75 per annum; assistant chief, $25; all other members, $9 a year each. The town of Newton has 4,300 inhabitants, in 800 houses. Within fifteen years there has not been an aggregate of $15,000 loss by fires within the town limits. An increase of pay for Jersey City firemen is being strongly urged itt some quarters. Chief Bowker, of Passaic, recommends that when a new water contract is made a clause he inserted requiring that all hydrants have five outlets—four for hose and one for…
