The New Fire Department of Columbia. A correspondent at Columbia, S. C., furnishes the following: On December 1, 1909, this city placed all public departments, except the police, in charge of the board of commissioners. W. M. Perry was elected chairman of the fire department committee. Since the commission took charge, it has ordered and will install a new 30-box Gamewell transmitter at the central station. It has also ordered the reserve engine to be moved from its present location to the central fire station where it will he connected with the heater under ten pounds steam pressure ready for service. Upon recommendation of the board, council has granted an increase in salaries to all engineers, assistant engineers, foremen and firemen of ten percent. The increase started from January 16, 1910. The former salaries were, engineers, $75, foremen $65, assistant engineers $60 and firemen $50. The present chairman of the…
