THE CHEMISTRY OF FLAME* I suppose there is no subject upon which so much and such continuous attention has been lavished as upon the subject of “Flame.” From the time of the old fire-worshippers right down to the most modern researchers we have had philosophers and thinkers in different parts of the world spending a vast amount of time to trace out the secret of flame, and when it is considered what an important part flame plays, this is not to be wondered at. We have always had liame with us, and up til! about fifty years ago, when we wanted to get artificial light, flame was the only means known. The history of flame takes us back some thousands of years before the birth of Christ, when the ancient lire worshippers flourished, and we find that right through the early days the burning of wood produced the requisite flame…
