Important Fire Paragraphs. Fire alarm gongs are being placed on the principal street corners of Paterson, N. J. They are a part of the regular alarm system and are designed to give traffic officials warning in case of a fire, that they may clear the streets of approaching apparatus. The lesson of the recent destructive and fatal fire in St. Johnsbury, Vt., has apparently not been lost on the residents of that city. According to recent accounts, a paid department will take the place of the present volunteer organization, a central fire station will be erected and automobile apparatus purchased. There were 3,138 fires in the national forests in 1909, and 1,186 of these were caused by sparks from passing locomotives, 431 by campers, 294 by lightning, 181 by burning brush, 97 by incendiaries, and the rest by sawmills and other causes.
