Toronto Fire Department Work. Toronto, the capital of the Province of Ontario. Canada, and the second largest city in the Dominion, had more fire alarms last year than during any previous year in the history of its fire department. According to the annual report of Chief John Thompson, there were 1,103 calls, exceeding those of the previous year 128. The total loss by fire during the year amounted to $740,931.78. being $333,058.15 less than in the year previous and $366,610.92 less than that of the year 1907. The insurance on buildings and contents of buildings in which fires occurred during the year amounted to $2,531,741.75. The highpressure service was operated at only three fires during the year, and only to a limited extent on each occasion, but decidedly proved its effectiveness as a conflagration prevention, the purpose for which it was installed.
