THE PURIFICATION PLANT OF THE ROCHESTER AND LAKE ONTARIO WATER COMPANY The power and purification plant of the Rochester and Lake Ontario Water Company is located on the shore of Lake Ontario about one and one-quarter miles west of the village of Charlotte, N. Y. Lake Ontario, the inexhaustible source of supply, is 180 miles long, 60 miles wide, with an area of 6,300 square miles. The greatest depth is supposed to be about 600 feet, while the rise and fall is about 54 inches. The drainage area, within New York state, is 12,400 square miles or about one-fourth the area of the entire state. The intake, which is about miles west from the light house pier at the mouth of the Genesee river, is of 24-inch cast-iron pipe extending 4.000 feet from the shore in water 40 feet deep.
