Ex-Deputy Fire Chief Duane William Duane, a former deputy fire chief of the fire department, died February 8 at his home, 149 West 131st street, this city, of a complication of diseases. He was 70 years old and had been in the department forty years. Mr. Duane, who was a member of the old volunteer fire department, joined the paid department in 1868. His rise was rapid. In 1892 he was a battalion chief, and in 1899 was appointed a deputy chief. In 1891 Mr, Duane received the Stephenson medal for having the best disciplined company in the department, He was retired in 1908. Mr. Duane was a native of Ireland, hut came to this country early in life.
