Survivors of Chicago Firemen.

Issue 9 and Volume 49.

Survivors of Chicago Firemen. The families of the Chicago firemen who lost their lives at the stockyards fire and who received a full month’s salary for December, contrary to law, were not given this emolument for January, when the payroll of the fire department was made up and their names left off. The city government was anxious to help the survivors of the firemen’s families by carrying them on the payroll for six months, but a decision was rendered by the corporation counsel’s office that it would be illegal to do so. Chief Seyfelich declared the council would have to pass an ordinance didecting him to give the salary to the dead firemen’s families before he could disregard the legal opinion.
