Quaker Oats Plant Burned at Battle Creek. A fire that broke out in the drying room of the Quaker Oats Company’s plant at Battle Creek, Mich., recently, caused a loss approximating $100,000. The building was of brick, four stories high, and covering a ground space of 50 x 250 feet. The oldest parts of the structure had not stood for more than eight years, and was mostly of mill construction with fire walls and standard fire doors. There was an equipment of fire extinguishing devices, and with these the employes attempted to extinguish the blaze without calling out the fire department. On each floor there was an auxiliary fire alarm that would have given a general alarm, while a street fire box was located in the office.
