FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING. The United States Forestry Service has adopted the automobile as an active agency in fighting forest fires in the great ranges of Washington and Oregon. One company has sold to the Government a string of specially equipped cars and they will be held in a state of readiness, on the district basis, not unlike the fire department of a city. Each car is fully equipped with axes, spades, picks, dynamite and all other fire-fighting devices. As a result of this new departure it is believed that the capacity and effectiveness of each ranger in the service has been immensely increased. The patrol duty has been simplified, quickened and extended. A trip that formerly required a whole day is now done in a few hours.
