Water Franchise Trouble at Hempstead. Taxpayers of Manhasset, Long Island, N. Y., have entered a protest against the granting of a franchise by the North Hempstead Town Board to two private water companies to supply the Manhasset and Lakeville districts. At a recent meeting of the town board, the Nassau Water Company and the North Hempstead Water Supply Company’s bids to supply water in the districts were accepted. One company offered to supply water in the section north of the railroad tracks, while the other offered to supply all the section south of the railroad tracks. A committee was authorized to take necessary steps to restrain the town board from turning over to these two corporations the privilege of supplying water in the two districts, and to endeavor to secure a public ownership system.
