Deputy Chief Strife at Newark. Because of the rejection of two candidates the State Civil Service Commission of Newark, N. J., has under advisement a proposition to reopen the list of applications for deputy chief of the local fire departmnet so as to admit all captains, as well as battalion chiefs, to the examinations. Five of the six battalion chiefs were held to be eligible for the examinations by the commission and were put through a medical and physical test. Two failed to receive the necessary 80 per cent. This leaves but three men who are entitled to take the mental examination. This narrowing of the list, it is held, causes a situation that prevents the carrying out of the spirit of the civil service act.
