Croker Examines Papers of Newark Firemen. The Newark Evening News of November 21, contained the following paragraph: “Having reached the conclusion that the civil service commission was properly within its rights in seeking for the efficiency records of the three battalion chiefs who have taken an examination for promotion to deputy chief, the fire commissioners are now ready to be obliging. At the board meeting Wednesday of this week, it is understood, the request will be granted and the threat of mandamus proceedings will not be taken. One of the interesting features of the examination of the candidates, who are Battalion Chiefs Matthew P. A. McDcrmit, Paul J. Moore and John J.
