Rockford Cuts Down Fire Loss. Although the Rockford, Ill., fire department has had 253 alarms to answer up to the present in 1911, the loss is not nearly so heavy from fires as during the corresponding period in 1910. Two big fires have caused a loss of about $34,000 but nearly 150 of the alarms have been from residences, and in many of these the property damaged was too slight to be figured in an estimate. The lack of calls in the business district and the absence of even one serious fire in this locality, is-believed to be largely due to the close inspection of basements. Chief Thomas stated recently that the loss from fire this year would be considered loss from firet his year would be considerably below last year, unless a serious fire occurred between now and New Year’s.
