HOW MANILA FIREMEN FOUGHT A CONFLAGRATION. Not long ago a report of a fire in Manila, P. I., was printed in this journal which showed that fire-fighting in that country had reached a high state of efficiency and that if the members of the department were given a reasonably fair opportunity, very effective work in extinguishment could certainly be accomplished. An account of the fire that recently destroyed a considerable part of the thickly populated section of the city given herewith as furnished by our regular correspondent, will prove interesting reading, as it shows that notwithstanding the inflammable nature of the buildings involved, the Manila fire department was fully equal to the occasion, keeping the loss down to such a low figure as $750,000 on buildings and contents.
