Chief Joseph E. Sloan of Newark, Dead Joseph E. Sloan, chief of the Newark, N. J., fire department, died last week Tuesday at his home, 22 Nelson place, after a long illness. Head of the fire department only since last June, Chief Sloan had been in failing health for a year and had announced his retirement, to take place on May 1. For several days the death of Chief Sloan had been momentarily expected. The fire board convened in executive session and adopted a resolution condoling with the decedent’s family and deploring his loss to the department. The commandants of all the engine companies notified the board that their quarters would be draped in black at the expense of the various organizations.
