New Fire Department Buildings. Forty-five Fire Department buildings, 42 of which are new fire houses and three of which are isolated fire alarm telegraph stations, are now being built by Fire Commissioner Joseph Johnson. The actual construction is well under way on a large number of these houses, and at least 21 fire houses will be ready for occupancy before the close of the summer. This progress in extending the Fire Department to keep pace with the development of the city is unprecedented in the New York Fire Department. Since the consolidation of the greater city 59 fire houses have been built in 14 years. The largest number prior to Cotnmisioner Johnson’s administration was in 1903, when 12 houses were built.
