The Oldest Chief The recent death of Chief George W. Anderson, of Petersburg, W. Va., makes Patrick Mealey, chief of the fire department at Gloucester City, N. J., the oldest active chief now living. Chief Mealey was elected to his present position on November 24, 1875, and was the first chief of that department. He has been a member of the International Association of Fire Engineers for 30 years. Chief Mealcy has recently had further honors thrust upon him, having been elected mayor of Gloucester City. He is a democrat, but the fight was made on his record of 37 years in a Republican stronghold, his majority being 100. Chief Mealcy is a veteran of the civil war, and served in the old volunteer fire department in Philadelphia. At that time Teddy McCusker was chief of the latter department.
