Fire That Need Not Excite Surprise On April 24 two men were killed and three were fatally hurt as the result of an explosion on the new Hamburg liner Imperator. The explosion was caused by the criminal carelessness of one of the workmen on board the steamer. Contrary to the rules, the man filled a cigar lighter from a benzine reservoir. While he was trying to see if the lighter was in working order he burned his fingers, and, forgetful of consequences and everything but the pain, he threw it from him. The lighter set fire to the benzine tank’s cover, and, while the workmen were endeavoring to put out the blaze, the reservoir exploded with terribly fatal effect.
