A Portage Lake Mill Burned Portage Lake, near Portage, Me., had one of the largest saw mills in the state, until a fire, which probably arose from a hot-box around the shafting, destroyed it completely, together with live Bangor and Aroostook freight cars on the mill siding and all the lumber piled in the immediate vicinity. The loss is estimated at between $60,000 and $70,000, well covered by insurance. The blaze broke out at 6.30 p. m., and as the building was of frame and was, besides, as dry as tinder, the flames soon got far ahead of the sixty mill hands who tried to control them. It was a vain attempt on their part, as there were no private fire appliances on hand and the building was not equipped with sprinklers.
