Memphis Has Most Disastrous Fire in Years Memphis, Tenn., recently had its must destructive fire in many years. The property burned was the R. J. Darnell hardwood lumber mills, the loss being placed at about $100,000. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it was discovered at a few minutes after seven o’clock in the morning. Four fire companies were on the scene within five minutes after the fire was discovered, but the blaze had spread in the veneer mill as if in powder and at no time after the department arrived was there any chance of saving the mill. At 7.15 o’clock Chief McFadden turned in the call for four other companies and a determined but unsuccessful attempt was made to stop the progress of the flames, which spread from the mill to the dry kiln and to the lumber stacked in the yard.
