St. Louis Fire Department Improvements Deferred Chief Charles E. Swingley, of the St. Louis, Mo., fire department has announced the indefinite postponement of the $100,000 improvement work that has been contemplated for the department The failure of the municipal assembly to appropriate the funds in the tax budget is responsible for the action of the chief. The proposed work included the erection of two new lire houses, the rebuilding of two more, and the installation of two motor engines and two automobile trucks, one to carry an aerial ladder for downtown use. Six years ago a bond issue of $130,000 was set aside for the tire department to provide funds for the purchase of land and the erection of new buildings. The equipment for the houses would have come out of municipal revenue. Although $70,000 of the special appropriation remains unexpended, Chief Swingley says the improvements must be put off…
