Third Quarterly Report on New York’s Fire Department GENERAL NEWS FEATURES Fire Commissioner Joseph Johnson, of New York City, in his report for the quarter ending September 30, presents the following information: Of the annual appropriation for the maintenance of the department of $3,945,945.50, there was expended during the quarter $6,423,148.36, leaving Balance of $5,522,799.04 for the remaining three months of the year. The uniformed force at close of the quarter in all the boroughs was 4,828, divided among 269 companies. The civilian force was 700. In the boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx and Richmond there were 1,468 street box alarms, 595 verbal, 90 automatic, 64 special signal, and 8 pneumatic signal alarms, making a total of 2.225.
