Engine Plant Fire at Davenport, Ia. GENERAL NEWS FEATURES The Schmidt Bros.’ engine works in West Third street. Davenport, Ia., was wholly destroyed, and the Fuhs Blue Paper Company’s plant and several other buildings adjoining were badly damaged by fire recently. The fire, which was caused by spontaneous combustion, started at 1.40 p. m. The department, in command of Chief Peter Denger, was called into service. At one time it was feared that the entire West Enc would be swept by the flames. There was much gasoline and other articles of a combustible nature in the plant, and as the fire reached these terrific explosions took place, and the flames darted up into the air many yards. The buildings on the north side of the block were not in danger, owing to the wind being from that direction, and the buildings west of the factory were not in danger. The…
